My wife entered the hospital with a really bad case of pneumonia but had just taken some Eliquis blood thinner. So, the hospital put her in a regular room to wait until the Eliquis was out of her system before inserting a drain tube in her lung. Suddenly her blood pressure dropped, and heart raced. The doctor’s rushed her to ICU and began inserting a drain tube in her lung with no family present to comfort her.
Nurse Kim in the ICU displayed all the confidence of a nurse and all the compassion of a big sister. She was able to play both roles simultaneously (despite the fact that my wife is probably twice Kim’s age). Later, my wife's ostomy broke open which is her worst nightmare. Again, nurse Kim gave calm and affectionate care. Kim was able to provide comfort to my wife that she would be all fixed and cared for. Ostomy break out situations are highly stressful for her. It isn’t easy to get her to relax and let go of her anxiety. Nurse Kim could do that with all the grace of a nurse and the compassion of a sister or friend. Thank you, nurse Kim.
