I know many people do not take the time to write about an exceptional experience they have had in the medical profession, but I wanted to make sure I reached out to tell you about an experience I recently had at Salem Hospital.

My mom is 82 years old and has always been in great health with no major issues, so when we faced a sudden and unexpected emergency, it was extremely difficult for both of us. During her time at Salem Hospital, she needed to undergo many tests, one of which was a lumbar puncture (LP). My mom was terrified, and I cannot begin to describe the emotional impact it had on me to see her so frightened and vulnerable.

Kim Littles-Lee was our nurse, and I quickly connected with her and shared my concerns. I was very emotional, but Kim immediately put both my mind and my mother’s mind at ease. I understand that medication is not typically given for this procedure, but I firmly believe there is no reason for someone to suffer unnecessarily. Kim took the time to reach out to the doctor, and it was agreed that my mom could be given something to help her relax.

More important than the medication, however, was Kim’s compassion and kindness. She carefully explained to my mom exactly what she could expect during the procedure, which greatly eased her fear. Kim also reassured my mom that she would stay right there with her throughout the procedure and even offered her hand for my mom to hold if she wanted to. That simple act of kindness and human connection meant more than I can adequately express.

My mom greatly appreciated Kim’s compassion, and so did I. I wanted to make sure I reached out to let you know how truly exceptional Kim was. I sincerely hope she receives some form of recognition for the care she provided. People like Kim make an enormous difference in the lives of patients and families, and I wanted to make sure her kindness, professionalism, and dedication are not overlooked or taken for granted.

Thank you, Kim, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
