On Monday afternoon, as I was pulling out of the President Street parking garage, my phone rang with a Facebook call from Kim. She was calling because my father had been involved in a multi-vehicle accident on the interstate and was transported to the ED without his phone, which was lost in the accident. My dad had no way to contact his family, and we had no idea he had been injured.

While checking him in, Kim asked about his family, and he mentioned that I taught at the College of Nursing. She recognized his last name and asked him for my first name. She then found me on Facebook and called me through the app. Kim’s actions that afternoon truly embody the spirit of the DAISY Award, honoring nurses who go above and beyond to provide compassionate, patient- and family-centered care. My family would have had no idea that something had happened to my dad if Kim had not taken the initiative and been kind enough to find a way to contact us.
