Our stay began with the emergency C-section of our son, G. We knew he was small and would likely have complications, but we had no idea the journey he would take us on. G has been at CHKD almost 28 weeks and most of the NICU nurses have cared for him along the way. We recognize all the medical staff has played an integral part in his success, but we want to give special recognition to his primary nurse Kim Peacock. The first time we met Kim, G was still on the 4th floor in his original pod and room. We were still unsure of what to expect and a little bit confused. We do remember Kim's kindness and encouragement as well as the soft/kind expressions of her face. We also remember Kim asking if we needed anything, going above and beyond in answering any questions, pulling up extra chairs so we could both sit down. Since then G traveled back and forth from the NICU to stepdown as his condition fluctuated. Almost 8 weeks ago Kim's primary patient went home and she chose G as her new primary. She has grown very close to G, paying close attention to his medical needs (immediately communicating with the residents and attending with concerns). She is careful to convey patient information to other nurses and comes back to check on G even if she is not his nurse that day. One day G was in isolation, and I saw Kim looking through the glass peeking in on the little man. I will never forget that. Kim takes extra care and time with G to provide with not only his medical needs but physical development, attention, and love. He's growing and his needs are changing. She helps meet those needs (with visual stimulation, for example). Kim deserves recognition for being a phenomenal nurse for G and being supportive and encouraging to our family.
