My first interaction with Kim was in November 2019 when my wife was a patient on 5A following a partial hip replacement. As the primary caregiver for my wife I am an aggressive advocate for her. Not to the point of being abrasive but persistent none the less. I ask a lot of questions. Some care providers view this as me challenging them. Not Kim. She knew the need for the patient and her advocate to understand the why of meds and procedures ordered. If she didn't have the answer she would find out and get back to us.
My wife was diagnosed with MDS over 9 years ago and we have been associated with Virginia Oncology Associates and staff regularly (sometimes several days a week) since. We have been able to observe firsthand the caring and compassion these caregivers show every day. Kim gives/has this same care and compassion for her patients. You just cannot fake that.
Following my wife's discharge from the hospital, we submitted (for the first time ever) a comment card highlighting the excellent care she had received, particularly from Kim.
Fast forward to January when I was admitted to 5A following knee replacement surgery. To say I was apprehensive is an understatement. Slow to come out of anesthesia, major pain, just wanting to go back to sleep, and a crowd of people poking and prodding and examining me head to toe. When I looked up one of the nurses was Kim and I had an overwhelming feeling of peace and I knew I was good hands. I cannot overemphasize the effect this had on my mental state.
Over the next couple of days, I would be encouraged to take meds I otherwise would not have taken and do exercises that were painful and had no apparent benefit. Kim patiently explained the benefits and how a little effort now would have a big payoff later. She would not take no for an answer and continued to follow up. As I continue in physical therapy, I appreciate her insight and efforts.
I carried a comment card home with me to fill out after the smoke had cleared, so to speak. I had seen the banner and info on The DAISY Award but thought it was for supervisors to recognize personnel. On a visit to the hospital a week ago I picked up a nomination form and was delighted to find it was a program to recognize nurses just like Kim!
Kim is a true DAISY Nurse.
