The medical team, including Palliative Care, met with the patient to deliver the difficult news that her condition was terminal and that, because of her deterioration, she would not be well enough to return home.

As the patient processed this heartbreaking information, her greatest concern was for her little dog and what would happen when the dog was left without her. Before she submitted to medications intended to ease her discomfort, she shared one final wish: “I would love to see my dog.”

Kim heard that request and treated it as though it were a physician's order and immediately began working to make it happen by involving her charge nurse, supervisor, and clinical administrator. After speaking with the Infectious Disease Department, the dog was approved to visit. When the patient saw her beloved fur baby, we saw more of an emotional response than when given her terminal news.

Kim works tirelessly to ensure that care needed is care received. She never hesitated to see this request through for her patient. We hired Kim post-nursing school with the notion that if we hired good people, all we need to do is step back and let them show how good they can be.

Thank you, Kim, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
