I have had the opportunity to work with Kim for more than a decade. She exemplifies the values of the Daisy Award, always going above and beyond. Two examples stand out:

Recently, one of our co-workers discovered she had breast cancer. Kim went with her to her chemo appointments multiple times, sitting, chatting and giving emotional support. Many people talk about going the extra mile, but Kim does it. Her commitment to her co-workers was never more evident than during that six month period when a friend and peer needed support.

In the past few months Kim was made aware in her role as a childbirth educator of an eleven year old who had become pregnant. The young girl needed education but it would not have been appropriate to join a class. Kim took the initiative and responsibility to “deliver” the education necessary for the child and her grandmother, making phone calls, scheduling appointments and taking them through the education. She individualized the curriculum so it would be understandable and was emotionally present for the young girl’s needs. She made social work contacts and helped the family work through their choice of an adoption placement for the baby.

When it was time for the birth, Kim came in “off the clock” to provide labor support for the mother, seeing through her commitment to her patient. The family was truly fortunate to have Kim in their corner.

Kim’s example of compassion has been a moving force in our department for years. I could give multiple other examples of her dedication to going above and beyond. She is deserving of the honor of the Daisy Award.
