Kimber Downs, BSN, RN
I would like to recognize Kimber Downs for her exceptional compassion, clinical skill, and commitment to Veteran-centered care.
During a routine Endocrine clinic visit, a Veteran required lab work, including a Hemoglobin A1c, for diabetes management. The Veteran had not reported to the lab due to severe anxiety and PTSD related to blood and needles stemming from trauma experienced during military service. His A1c levels had previously been outside normal limits, contributing to delays in surgical planning for his left foot. Completion of labs was essential to prevent further delay in care.
When I contacted Kimber for assistance, she responded immediately without hesitation. From the moment she entered the room, she approached the Veteran with calm reassurance and genuine empathy. She acknowledged his PTSD and anxiety in a respectful and validating manner, ensuring he felt heard rather than dismissed.
Kimber implemented a trauma-informed approach to the blood draw. She strategically positioned herself and the Veteran so that he would not see the needle or the blood-filled vials. She used distraction techniques and steady, reassuring communication throughout the procedure. Her presence transformed what could have been a highly distressing situation into a manageable and successful experience.
The Veteran later expressed that this was the easiest blood draw he had ever experienced. He voiced gratitude for the patience, professionalism, and respect shown to him. Because of Kimber's intervention, we were able to obtain the necessary labs and prevent further delay in his care.
