She asked questions about my medical history, and she cared about and listened to my concerns. She explained everything, provided me with information, and allowed me to ask questions. She made me feel like I had my own bodily autonomy, and I was heard.
I am writing this 39 weeks and four days pregnant, relatively irritable and uncomfortable. I am the patient of the most empathic nurse I’ve ever met, Nurse Kim. I started iron infusion therapy four weeks ago because my iron supplements weren’t working; I was weak, nauseous and dizzy. I was nervous to get infusions for a variety of reasons. I’m a first time mom and didn’t know what to expect. To be honest, I’ve had bad experiences with nurses my whole life; I never wanted to be near them because of this. I wasn’t excited to have to go to the hospital weekly for more needles and to see a potentially grumpy overworked nurse. Then I met Kim. I was so reluctant at my first appointment, but she made me feel so relaxed and comfortable. She asked questions about my medical history, and she cared about and listened to my concerns. She explained everything, provided me with information, and allowed me to ask questions. She made me feel like I had my own bodily autonomy, and I was heard. I’ve never had this kind of bedside manner; I was in shock. As I was leaving the appointment, I hugged her, and she told me she was scheduling me for next week's appointment with her. The next two appointments went the same; it was a truly pleasant experience with Kim's kind, compassionate nursing care. She spoke highly of the hospital, her coworkers, and her profession. She explained she may be working in another unit to cover someone’s leave and even came in early to make sure I was set up before she left for her new assignment. This showed me that she clearly cares about and is committed to her work and her team. I just finished my last infusion and am strangely saddened to stop my appointments. Then, on the bright side, I am healthier, and I just can’t wait to bring my baby boy to meet her, hopefully soon. I grew in just one month to appreciate the nursing field more, simply from these four visits with a nurse who shows others what it means to be a good nurse. I tell everyone about my experience and how happy I am with the care I’ve received. Kim showed dedication, prioritized communication, had a strong commitment and confidence, and, most importantly, compassion for everyone around her.
