Last week, Kimberly came into work to the same group of patients. While assessing one of her patients she noticed that the patient's belly was grossly distended; much more than the previous night. This patient was a young girl with multiple comorbidities. Kimberly began making phone calls immediately to have the patient seen, assessed, and taken for tests even though the family was reluctant to comply. The family told her, "She's making a big deal of nothing and the patient will be fine." Kimberly persisted and brought in a team of physicians to see her. Kimberly persisted until the family agreed to allow testing and eventually have the patient transferred to HUP that night. Within a few hours, the patient was taken in for emergency surgery. Kimberly's nursing skills, clinical judgment, and determination most likely saved this patient's life.
