They offered distraction, dignity, and a sense of being cared for at a moment when the family felt overwhelmed and vulnerable.
A mother and her adult daughter were admitted together to the surgical floor. Because the daughter had developmental challenges and relied heavily on her mother’s presence, they were placed in a shared room to ensure comfort and stability. When the mother’s condition worsened, she required transfer to the ICU for a higher level of care. The separation was difficult for both of them, and the family found themselves stretched thin as the father tried to be present in two places at once. During a conversation with the mother in the ICU, Kim learned how deeply she worried about her daughter; alone, anxious, and without her primary support person. Instead of simply offering reassurance, Kim asked what she could do to make her stay easier. On her own time, and with her own resources, Kim and her daughter went out and purchased coloring books, crayons, and activity items to help keep the patient’s daughter engaged and comforted during her hospital stay. These small items carried enormous meaning. They offered distraction, dignity, and a sense of being cared for at a moment when the family felt overwhelmed and vulnerable. When the mother learned what Kim had done, she expressed deep gratitude. Not just for the gifts themselves, but for the kindness behind them. She was surprised that someone would take personal time and energy to ensure her daughter felt supported during such a difficult separation.
