Eventually, Kim and the family worked out a plan of action that provided closure and resolution in their time of need.
Recently, the Cancer Center was contacted to follow up on a patient's family's request to perform genetic testing on a deceased patient. This request is outside of what our genetic professionals normally do as they practice within an ambulatory clinic setting. However, Kim took it upon herself to investigate how we could accommodate the genetic testing, given the circumstances.
This meant connecting with the family, lab services, outpatient physicians, billing personnel, the house supervisors' office, and much more. Eventually, Kim and the family worked out a plan of action that provided closure and resolution in their time of need. It is important to note that the family was never informed of the reasons why their request was outside the norm and may not be able to be performed. However, they were met with compassion, empathy, and possible solutions. In the end, the family agreed to forgo genetic testing and were given other avenues to pursue to find the same answers to their questions.
These solutions were more timely, provided closure, and had less financial impact. The family was very grateful for the time spent. This kindness and service provided by Kim is representative of what she does day in and day out.
