I had gender-affirming top surgery. My first contact with the doctor’s office was with Kim. From her utterly professional handling of all matters related to my gender identity that often seem to befuddle others, to her downright compassionate and caring approach to nursing, Kim has been reliably supportive and comforting through a process that can sometimes leave patients like me feeling intimidated, uncared for, or even shamed. Kim ensured my records accurately reflected my identity, that I was addressed as desired, and I received appropriately professional care in the outpatient surgery department. She has inquired at every turn about whether my experience has met Aurora’s stated commitment to providing inclusive, quality health care to LGBTQ patients, and she has committed to act in the few instances when it has not; she does very well by Aurora and the gender health services program, and I cannot adequately express how significant a role her presence and care played in me having such a positive surgical experience and outcome.
