Kimberly Lawyer is kind, compassionate, caring and takes the extra time in a busy, fast-paced ER to make sure her patients and their families understand what to expect and are comfortable during their stay. Kim exceeds the seven standards of ETMC with her natural ability to comfort others. During patient rounding, I visited with a patient and his mother regarding the care Kim was providing. The mother gushed over Kim's care and was greatly appreciative that Kim took the extra time to talk with her and fully explain every step of her child's illness and his care. She stated that she "had never felt so at ease in the ER which can be a scary place." Another patient who was in the ER for an extended period of time was made comfortable by Kim's frequent rounding and excellent communication. She stated, "I am extremely pleased with Kim. Despite multiple delays in my care, Kim kept me updated and I never felt like a number."

...Mr. E's first experience in our ED did not meet his or his families expectations. Kim took care of Mr. E the second time he came to the ED and he and his family had a wonderful experience. They chose to come to Athens ED even though it is a long distance from their home and they have other hospitals closer to them. Kim educated Mr. E and his family about his J-tube and Mr. E's son-n-law stated, "She taught us everything we need to know about J tubes and tracheostomies and even potential problems with these to look for to ensure he gets good care at the nursing home. She educated us on how to take care of these medical devices which gave us a sense of empowerment and like we had more control in his medical care." Mr. E has had frequent visits since then to Emergency Room and he always smiles when he sees Kim working. Mr. E's son-in-law said, "I know it will be a good day when she is our nurse." When I spoke to Mr. E's son-in-law regarding nominating Kim for this award, he was overwhelmed with excitement that there was an avenue to recognize such excellent care. He also expressed that when Kim receives the award he would like to be here to personally congratulate her. He stated that there could not be a better DAISY Award Honoree.

Kim is also a mentor to new nurses to the department. She takes new graduate nurses under her wing and patiently and calmly explains the ER processes and tries to impart the lessons she has learned to help them become the best nurse they can be. Kim can always be counted on to step into the role of charge nurse and even when working as a staff nurse is a natural leader that others turn to if they need assistance. She is an awesome team member!
