My wife and I arrived at Winnie Palmer Hospital for the birth of our first child, L. Upon being admitted we were assigned to Registered Nurse Kim Plymale in Winnie’s PACU. Kim demonstrated incredible professionalism, understanding, and kindness. Being that L would be our first child, she did an excellent job calming both of us down and making sure we understood everything going on. What really set Kim above everyone else was her relentless drive to show she cared. It really meant a lot to my wife and me to see someone who still has so much passion for her job and puts her patients first. We could really tell that Kim doesn’t treat her career as a “job” but instead a passion. The days following delivery, I ran into Kim in the cafeteria, where she took the time to speak with me and ask how everyone was doing. She also mentioned how she was going to visit and check on my wife and newborn. To me, her words felt genuine again, but knowing how busy her job can be, I could understand if she wouldn’t be able to visit. Fast forward some time..sure enough, after 7 pm and after she was supposed to be done for the day, she showed up at my wife’s/son’s room to check on her just like she said. My wife was so happy to see her. Kim spent another 30-45 minutes with my wife, and is the reason our son finally latched. Kim provided knowledge and expertise that no one had been able to give thus far, all of her own accord. She didn’t need to visit. She chose to care and chose to help. Kim is a model nurse and a perfect example for other nurses.
