I was pulled to pediatrics last week from NICU and took care of a patient with a wound vac. About 2 hours into my shift the wound vac was beeping and we were unable to troubleshoot the machine. The nursing supervisor sent Kirby from the ortho floor to help. Not only was she extremely helpful, she was so kind to not only me and my patient who also had Asperger syndrome and was highly anxious about the beeping. She took the time to explain everything that she was doing before she did it, taking breaks if he needed it. She also spoke to the MD about the patient because I was busy with a different patient. She then stayed and helped me take the wound vac off, pausing for about 30 minutes to administer morphine mid-way through the procedure for pain. She was up on the floor for over 2 hours with me after all said and done (constantly calling her unit to make sure her patients were also cared for).
Kirby truly loves what she does and helping not only patients but fellow nurses is definitely high on her priority list. She was an exceptional example of what great nursing is!
