My mother is a 75-year-old with a complex wound. There not enough words to express how grateful I am to her for being assertive and so knowledgeable about wound care. The situation upon first dressing change was assessed by Kit - she demonstrated assertiveness and knowledge by communicating to the surgeon why the existing method of care would not be beneficial.
She was able to cite literature to back up what she was saying. The result: because of her, the surgeon agreed to do the two-day wound wash. She involved another wound nurse, Yong, to advocate to the surgeon. The wound decreased in size. Day 1 - 5.1 x 3.5 after wash, 4.5 x 3, that is a difference! Beyond appreciation for her and the wound care team. They really demonstrated patient-centered care and advocacy. Kit maintained professionalism, poise, and follow-through.
