Klaire Thomason, RN

On the night shift one night in November, I went with Klaire Thomason, RN, into a comfort patient’s room to check to make sure she had not passed away. The patient was gasping for air as if she was panicking. Klaire proceeded to touch and caress her face and hair. She spoke in the most calming voice and told the patient that we were with her and she was not alone. She told her everything was okay. The patient’s respirations began to slow and she calmed down. The patient tried so hard to speak to Klaire. Klaire just kept telling her it was okay and she was with her. It was the most beautiful moment I’ve ever seen on the oncology floor. Death is nothing new and the very routine. It was amazing to see how much Klaire truly cared and how much she calmed a dying woman in a moment of panic. I hope that in my final moments I have a nurse like Klaire.
