I had mitral valve repair surgery and stayed until I was discharged. My nurse was exceptional. Her name is Krissi (Kreszentia Schwab), and she is an RN in the CCU/ICU. I have been describing Krissi to my family and friends as the nurse who is heaven on earth.

When I first came in for surgery, a nurse needed to draw blood for a blood test and insert an IV. I explained that I am a very difficult draw and asked if your staff has ever used an ultrasound to find veins to help make the process easier. (I had one used when I had a procedure done in April.) The nurse was very polite and explained that they don't use them. I had three nurses try to get a vein, and after six needle pricks, Krissi was able to get it on the seventh try.

The next time I interacted with Krissi was the night after my surgery. She was in my room, and I was trying to remove my covers. She came over and asked me what I needed. I whispered that I was hot. Not having heard me, she leaned in closer and asked me again, and I told her. I remember her lifting my arms carefully to move the blanket off me. It literally felt as if she were an angel working around me to make me feel more comfortable. She put a cool cloth on my forehead, and in addition, she gave me ice chips. Her soothing voice and compassionate care that evening were more than outstanding.

The next morning, she was beside me as I was going to stand up for the first time. I immediately announced that I felt sick, and Krissi gave me a plastic container for me to vomit in. She then offered to get me something to help with my nausea, and I asked for some ginger ale. She was trying to console me after I got out of bed and into a chair because I had this sudden burning sensation in my side (I assume where one of the incisions was). It got to a point where I was crying because the stinging was so strong. She went to get an ice pack, and it was a great relief to hold that to my side.

Throughout the time that she was on the schedule during my stay, she always greeted me with a smile, had a fresh cup of water for me, and showed sincere compassion for my well-being to ensure that I was comfortable.

I will forever remember Krissi. She is an incredible nurse and human being.
