Kris is known for her day to day operations of keeping our 800-bed level I trauma center fully staffed and operational. Although you may only "see" what she does at the unit level, I can assure you her role includes so many different dimensions, most of which are "behind the scenes". On an average day, Kris interacts with nurses, physicians, patients, their families, allied healthcare workers, emergency medical services, law enforcement, and sadly, but true, the medical examiner's office and funeral homes. Kris is well-respected and trusted, as she upholds her professionalism when dealing with the most difficult situations. She has the ability to multi-task to the 10th degree while maintaining her composure. She is kind, considerate and empathetic to others. She is truly selfless, as she always puts the needs of others before herself. I would like to share with you one of the many examples that prompted me to write this nomination.
During rush hour one day, there was a tragic car accident that took the lives of 3 generations of one family, who were vacationing at Disney. The survivors of this crash were brought to ORMC and APH respectfully for medical care. Kris was instrumental in gaining the family's trust as she coordinated a compassionate plan of care to ease the surviving family member's suffering. Kris spent most of her day, foregoing eating lunch or taking any breaks to ensure the family was well-supported. Kris' primary concern was to maintain the anonymity of the family, ease their suffering, and provide as much comfort and support as possible. Kris coordinated with social work and spiritual care to ensure the family had the emotional support they needed. She spent countless hours on the phone canceling reservations, rescheduling flights, and working tirelessly with the Medical Examiner's office to ensure those lost in the accident would be released for their final flight home. She coordinated an expedited safe discharge for the father, so he could be at the bedside of his children at APH. To ensure his safety, Kris, collaborated with protective services to "secretly" transport the father from ORMC to APH, so he would be protected from the media. Additionally, Kris coordinated with the Child/Life specialists at APH to find housing for the family once they were all discharged. Kris made such an impact on the family, that they notified her when they arrived home safely. They thanked her for everything she did to make a terrible situation more bearable.
To me, Kris' actions embrace the core values of The DAISY Award. She has a love and a passion for nursing, that she exhibits every day. She is trusted and respected by not only healthcare professionals but members of the community as well. She is an admirable, professional nurse who is truly selfless. Her empathy towards others is proof of her integrity.
