A patient came in with a throat injury. As Krislyn pulled him back and started triaging him, he said he was hit in the chest and throat the night before. Krislyn asked him if he had been mugged or robbed or if he knew the person. She also asked if he filed a police report. He stated it was an ex, and he didn’t even think to file a police report. She said, "Okay, I can help with that." She kept going with her triage, and she got to the abuse screen part where we ask if they feel safe at home. He said no, which opened up more questions for her to ask. He said his ex poisoned his dogs, and she could tell he was still holding back, and she asked if there was more. She said he broke down and said no one has ever asked me these questions before or taken the time to care. She said his ex was taking his children to places where she was prostituting and putting them in bad situations, and Krislyn immediately called CPS to help his children out of the situation and helped him by calling the police for a police report. He was very grateful and had never been offered help. Her response to us was, “I knew I needed to be diligent, follow through, and be a good nurse for him. I hope I helped his children and him. It just broke my heart. This makes our jobs emotionally hard thinking about those kids, but I know we did the right thing.” Krislyn is a nurse who continuously goes above and beyond in all aspects of her job. She is always diligent and always the best nurse to her patients. They all love her, rightfully so.
