Their teamwork, leadership, and advocacy for their patient were evident in every step of the process.
During my clinical rotation on the pediatric floor, I had the privilege of witnessing a moment that truly reminded me why nursing is such a special profession. As a nursing student preparing to enter the field, experiences like this shape the kind of nurse I hope to become. On this day, two nurses, Michaela and Krista, demonstrated the compassion, professionalism, and leadership that make an extraordinary difference in patient and family care.

From the beginning of the shift, both Michaela and Krista were incredibly welcoming and eager to include me in the learning experience. As a student, it can sometimes feel intimidating to step onto a unit, but they immediately created an environment where I felt supported, encouraged, and comfortable asking questions. They allowed me to participate in patient care and ensured I was able to learn throughout the day, which meant a great deal to me as someone preparing to soon enter the nursing profession.

Partway through the shift, a situation arose that became much more complex than anyone had anticipated. It required additional evaluation, careful communication, and significant education for the parents. Despite the unexpected escalation, Michaela handled the situation with remarkable professionalism and compassion. She provided thorough education to the child’s parents in a respectful and supportive manner, ensuring that they understood the importance of the care their child needed.

What stood out most was the way she explained the information in multiple ways, making sure the parents truly understood the situation and felt supported throughout the conversation.

At one point during the interaction, the situation became emotionally intense. Michaela briefly stepped out of the room to take a moment to regroup before returning to continue the conversation. When she re-entered, she did so with calmness, professionalism, and renewed compassion. Watching this moment unfold showed me an important lesson in nursing: that caring for patients and families sometimes requires us to pause, collect ourselves, and return fully present so we can continue to provide the best care possible.

Krista also stepped in during this situation and played an important role in helping de-escalate the interaction. Through therapeutic communication, patience, and empathy, she helped support both the parent and the care team. Her calm and compassionate presence helped create an environment where the parent felt heard while still reinforcing the education necessary for the child’s care.

Together, Michaela and Krista worked collaboratively and communicated effectively with the interdisciplinary team to ensure everyone involved in the patient’s care was informed and engaged. Their teamwork, leadership, and advocacy for their patient were evident in every step of the process.

As a nursing student nearing graduation, this experience left a profound impact on me. Watching these two nurses navigate a difficult situation with such grace, respect, and dedication reinforced the importance of compassion, education, and advocacy in nursing practice. They not only cared for their patient and family but also took the time to support and mentor a student during a challenging moment.

Michaela and Krista exemplify what it means to be outstanding nurses and role models within the profession. Their compassion, professionalism, and commitment to both patient care and student learning are qualities that embody the true spirit of nursing. I feel incredibly fortunate to have witnessed their care and leadership, and I will carry the lessons I learned from them throughout my nursing career.
