July 2026 Honoree
Kristarae Merder
I am honored to nominate Krista Merder for a DAISY Award in recognition of her compassionate, patient-centered care and exceptional advocacy during her clinical rotation. Throughout the clinical rotation, Krista consistently demonstrated respect, empathy, and professionalism in her interactions with patients.
One particular experience highlighted her ability to see beyond a patient's diagnosis or circumstances and recognize the dignity and humanity of the individual before her. During a clinical rotation, she cared for a patient who was experiencing significant physical and emotional challenges. The patient had a recent hip fracture, a prior below-knee amputation, severe pain, and mobility limitations. Additional circumstances made repositioning and comfort measures more difficult. Despite these barriers, Krista approached the patient with patience, compassion, and genuine concern for his well-being.
What stood out most was her commitment to advocacy. She was attentive to the patient's pain and comfort needs, proactively communicating concerns to the healthcare team and ensuring that appropriate interventions were not overlooked. She thoughtfully advocated for measures that would improve the patient's comfort and preserve his dignity. Equally important, she intentionally engaged with the patient as a person rather than focusing solely on his medical condition. She listened, validated his concerns, and provided a human connection during a vulnerable time.
The essence of nursing extends beyond performing skills and administering treatments. It includes recognizing the worth of every individual, advocating for those whose voices may not be heard, and providing compassionate care without judgment. Krista exemplified these qualities through her actions and interactions. Her ability to combine clinical awareness with genuine compassion reflects the values of the nursing profession and the spirit of the DAISY Award. For these reasons, I wholeheartedly recommend Krista for this recognition.
