Kristel Gallena has dedicated many years to the medical-surgical unit, consistently refining her clinical expertise and demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. She brings not only a wealth of knowledge but also exceptional critical thinking skills, making her a trusted resource for staff seeking guidance and innovative solutions to complex challenges. Regardless of whether she is serving in the charge nurse role that day, Kristel is frequently called for help in troubleshooting equipment, navigating unique patient needs, and finding resources. Her approach is thoughtful, collaborative, and solution-oriented.

For example, when our unit received a new chest tube drainage system that both the primary RN and I were unfamiliar with, I reached out to Kristel for assistance. Despite managing her own patient assignment, she took the time to come to the room and assess the new atrium and determine the appropriate setup. When in the resource role, she is often called before the Charge RN is (which is our standard) to evaluate a patient whose medical condition is worsening and may need rapid response. Her willingness to support her colleagues while maintaining high standards of care truly reflects her professionalism and dedication.

Compassionate Care:

The decision to nominate Kristel for this award was made collectively by the A5E Unit Council. In speaking with nurses, the nurse manager, and CNAs, there was a consistent and resounding theme: Kristel is deeply compassionate and consistently goes above and beyond for both her patients and her colleagues.

One notable example involved a patient with an eating disorder for whom a nasogastric tube was recommended to provide short-term nutritional support. Despite thorough discussions with the physician, the patient was resistant to the intervention. During an already demanding shift, Kristel dedicated additional time to engage with the patient and establish a special connection through thoughtfully addressing their concerns and building trust. Through her empathetic communication and patient-centered approach, she was ultimately able to facilitate placement of the tube, contributing to improved clinical outcomes. Even the provider gave recognition to Kristel for her empathy, kindness, and effort.

On a regular basis, Kristel is asked to help in challenging patient and family situations. She helps address concerns, de-escalate tense conversations, and ensure delivery of essential care. For example, confused patients who will not take their medications from the primary RN or who struggle against staff while providing care.

Exemplary Service:

Kristel serves as an exceptional role model within our unit and the nursing profession. She approaches challenges with a positive attitude and a genuine commitment to continuous growth and professional development. She collaborates effectively with all members of the healthcare team and consistently demonstrates outstanding interpersonal skills. Kristel remains attentive to the well-being of those around her, proactively checking in with nurses and CNA's who appear overwhelmed, responding to call lights for patients outside of her assignment, and offering relief breaks to team members regardless of whether she is their break buddy.

For example, we had a very busy unit on a day when floor staff was short. I was Charge RN and responsible for helping others take their breaks, but it was Kristel who came to me, took on my role while having a full assignment on the floor so that I could go on break. Through her compassion, teamwork, and strong work ethic, she consistently exemplifies the highest standards and core values of professional nursing.

Kristel embodies a rare combination of clinical competence, technical skill, compassion, energy, flexibility, and reliability. She delivers holistic, patient-centered care by taking the time to truly understand her patients—their individual needs, concerns, and goals—and tailoring her approach accordingly. Even when not acting in the preceptor role, Kristel is committed to developing others, effectively teaching clinical skills to staff at all levels while fostering their knowledge, confidence, and professional growth. She adapts seamlessly to the evolving demands of the healthcare environment, consistently maintaining a positive and solution-focused attitude. Kristel exemplifies the art of nursing through her integration of compassion, integrity, and critical thinking, setting a standard of excellence for those around her.
