I would like to nominate one of my fellow nurses, Kristen Willoughby, whom I believe deserves outstanding recognition. Kristen serves as a role model and resource to all other nurse on the floor. She is dedicated and committed to our patient population. Regardless of the census or acuity, Kristen is always willing to lend a hand to her fellow coworkers and is a strong patient advocate. Over the past few months we have worked together very closely on a number of occasions.
There was one particular shift and our unit was swamped with many admissions, very high acuity and patient needs on the floor. I had a heavy load and multiple tasks that needed to be completed. Kristen took two back-to-back admissions and put an IV in a patient and also served as the charge nurse, performing the many duties that it entails. She has always been such a great team player. While most people do not take on these kinds of extra responsibilities under pressure, she does all this graciously.
A few months ago, I had a patient that refused to take any medications by mouth. A few nurses attempted to get this child to take his medications and were not successful. Kristen devised a plan to assist me in helping the child swallow his medication. We used a syringe and connector tube that went straight to the back of the throat. This time the patient successfully swallowed his medication. Kristen is a very innovative and fast thinker.
She has exemplified leadership continuously, is a devoted teacher and contributes in all aspects of nursing to our unit. Kristen is a great nurse to work with and deserving of the DAISY Award.
