"Kristi gave my Dad the best gift - the gift of hearing his family laugh, sing his favorite song, and love spending time together again."
Kristi Pollock is a shining light who provides extraordinary and compassionate care to her patients and families. Kristi and the Palliative Care team go above and beyond each and every day. As you watch her work, you know that she is doing what she was called to do. Palliative Care takes a special person- it's a calling. She listens attentively to the fears, concerns, and needs of her patients and families. Treats patients with dignity and respect.
Often, patients are faced with uncertainties and fears based on a new diagnosis or end-of-life discussions. The team provides a holistic approach that helps reduce the distress and burdens of those facing serious illnesses and facing death. Providing emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual support helps to improve the quality of life for the patient and family. Krisit often has to have difficult and complex conversations with families. As a patient advocate, she ensures the patient's wishes are followed by family and the healthcare team. Families can have a difficult time navigating through end-of-life decisions. I remember one family who didn't agree and were completely split between continuing to treat and comfort care. Kristi set up a family meeting and was able to get everyone on the same page prior to their Father's passing. After the patient passed, I spoke with the daughter. She was very grateful to Kristi for taking the time to sit down and listen to her family. It helped to focus them on their Father's wishes and end-of-life goals. During the last 3 days of his life, they were able to be in agreement with one another, share memories, and enjoy the final days together as a family. She said, "Kristi gave my Dad the best gift - the gift of hearing his family laugh, sing his favorite song, and love spending time together again."
I have seen Kristi hold the hand of her dying patient and begin to pray with her to help calm her fears as tears ran down her cheeks. Another patient was in pain, but the family didn't want to give medication and not be awake and alert. Nurses tried to educate, but were unsuccessful. Kristi had developed a trusting relationship with the family. She helped ease the fears of this family and agreed to the medication. The patient was able to pass peacefully without pain and suffering, but still gave the family quality time with their loved one. Kristi had handprints made of a dying young mother so her girls would always remember their mother's loving hands. She gave this family a memory they can cherish. The team takes the time to do this for families with children. What an incredible, priceless gift for these children! I could continue to give hundreds of examples, but I will save everyone from more tears. Kristi makes a difference for our patients, families, nurses, and healthcare team.
Thank you, Kristi, for being an extraordinary nurse.
