It is with immense respect and deep gratitude that I nominate Kristi Stephenson for the DAISY Leader Award. Kristi is not merely an Assistant Nurse Manager; she is a quintessential nursing leader whose dedication, profound compassion, and unwavering commitment to the highest standards of professional excellence have created a transformational impact on the culture of our emergency department team and, most importantly, on the well-being and safety of the patients we are privileged to serve.
Kristi’s tenure as a leader in our department spans several successful years, and throughout this time, she has been a living embodiment of the mission and values of Ascension. She possesses a rare ability to approach every operational challenge, complex staffing issue, or high-acuity patient situation with a sense of calm purpose and professional poise. The core of her decision-making process is always anchored in two critical priorities: enhancing patient safety and ensuring robust support for her staff.
Kristi’s leadership extends far beyond her title; it is a palpable, reassuring presence. Her team trusts implicitly that she will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them on the busiest, most stressful shifts, that she will practice truly deep and active listening, that she will advocate fiercely and justly on their behalf, and that she will consistently follow through on commitments with unassailable integrity. She is a mentor who elevates everyone around her.
This past year, Kristi’s influence and dedication took a remarkable leap, extending her impact far beyond the physical walls of Ascension Seton Williamson. She recognized a significant, system-wide opportunity to enhance patient safety across the entire emergency care continuum. Taking the lead, Kristi played a central, pivotal role in the comprehensive revitalization and implementation of Ascension’s national fall risk process, specifically tailored for emergency departments across the entire country.
This was a colossal, multifaceted undertaking. It required rigorous, evidence-based research; the development of complex, cross-regional collaborative relationships with leaders and clinicians nationwide; the systematic development of new, scalable processes; the creation and deployment of extensive, effective staff education modules; and a sensitive consideration of the patient experience. Her exceptional leadership not only succeeded in improving immediate safety practices but also culminated in the creation of a sustainable, standardized, and evidence-based clinical model that is now successfully utilized nationwide across the entire Ascension system. This initiative alone demonstrates a level of commitment and contribution that is truly exceptional for local department leaders.
Furthermore, Kristi’s relentless dedication to advancing nursing practice is reflected in her commitment to scholarly contributions. Her expertise and leadership in patient safety were recognized when she was formally published in the prestigious Journal of Emergency Nursing. This outstanding accomplishment is a testament to her passion for elevating the entire profession and her commitment to ensuring that emergency nursing care is always guided by the most current data, innovative thinking, and profound compassion. She understands that the best care is born from the convergence of clinical excellence and scholarly rigor.
Crucially, despite the demanding scope and national visibility of her system-wide work, Kristi never once diminished or stepped back from her fundamental daily responsibilities within our department. She remained an accessible, consistent, and invaluable source of support for the staff. She expertly managed complex operational and throughput needs, engaged with patience and empathy with patients and their families, and provided patient, expert guidance to both our newest nurses and our most experienced clinicians. She leads with an authentic sense of empathy, a commitment to complete transparency, and a deep intrinsic sense of responsibility to her team’s professional and personal well-being.
Kristi Stephenson is the kind of leader who inspires profound growth. She motivates those around her to relentlessly strive to be better: better nurses, more collaborative and compassionate coworkers, and fundamentally, better human beings. Her leadership emanates from the heart, and this deep-seated human connection is visible in every professional decision she makes and is reflected in the positive impact she has on every patient and staff member whose life she touches.
For her unwavering dedication, her transformative and meaningful contributions to the national advancement of emergency nursing practice, and her genuine, boundless compassion for every patient and staff member she encounters, I am exceptionally proud to nominate Kristi Stephenson for the DAISY Leader Award. She is a truly deserving recipient of this most distinguished honor.
