A young male patient admitted for treatment of his Lymphoma would come in for his treatments with increased levels of anxiety. He was untrusting and often times appeared as if he were losing control. During one of his treatments Kristie decided to bring in bandanas for him to wear while in the hospital. She believed this was a way for her to start building a trusting relationship with him as well as provide him with a sense of normalcy.

On one occasion the patient became very tearful and upset for spilling water from his ice pitcher. Kristie took the time to stay at his bedside and comfort him through what he believed was a diagnosis that yielded him powerless; which Kristie understood was fueling his frustration. By recognizing the patient was having these concerns Kristie was able to build a rapport with him.

On his most recent visit, the patient decided to end his treatment. Kristie controlled her emotions and allowed the patient to express himself before encouraging him to complete the course of his treatment. The patient shared how much he appreciates Kristie and the other nurses for putting up with his behavior and never giving up on him.
