I would like to share a story of how our nurse, Kristin Carlson, saved a patient’s husband’s life yesterday. Our patient has been admitted here, being treated for Influenza A, and she is always accompanied by her husband, whom I have had the pleasure of interacting with in the past few days. On Sunday morning, during rounds, I discussed with Kristin that the patient often gets anxious without her husband and advised her to be on the lookout for her husband’s arrival. I mentioned that her husband usually comes in the morning, perhaps just delayed due to the weather. Kristin noticed that the husband did not come as expected, so she started calling him, but wasn't getting any response. She did not stop there but went above and beyond to look for another relative and reached out. The relative rushed to the patient’s house, where, reportedly, they found the patient’s husband unconscious on the kitchen floor. They were able to call EMS, and the patient’s husband was brought to St. John’s ED and admitted to the ICU briefly. I checked on the patient and her husband today. I am happy to report he is alive and well.

Without Kristin’s initiative and overall care of her patient and their loved ones, the patient’s husband would likely have been found much later in a critical condition or worse. I commend her for her hard work and care. I just like to share how wonderful it is that she was working with us that day and how grateful I am for her effort. The family shared the same sentiment.
