Not only did she hold my left hand, she took her other arm and put it around my back and hugged me, putting my head on her shoulder and patting my hair.
When I was pregnant with my second son, I went toMethodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital one night for high blood pressure. They dismissed me after monitoring me for a while, but I ended up going back another four times within two weeks. One of those trips I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, and I kept being sent home on bed rest. On the fifth time I went, I had a headache that wouldn't go away, and the doctor decided to deliver me at 36 weeks. With my first son, I had an emergency C-section with an epidural that went out, so I felt everything. Needless to say, I was TERRIFIED of having this second C-section. Around shift change for night shift, our new Nurse came in and told us who she was (Kristin). After seeing how scared I was, she told us that she had a similar situation when she had her kids, and getting a spinal was so much better than getting an epidural. That made me feel better.
After a while, when it was time to go to the operating room, my husband had to step out while I got my spinal so he could suit-up for surgery. That got my nerves going again, and I remember I was shaking so bad. I asked Nurse Kristin if she could hold my hand while I got injected, and she agreed. Not only did she hold my left hand, she took her other arm and put it around my back and hugged me, putting my head on her shoulder and patting my hair. Not only was this very comforting, but it also allowed me to be in a relaxing position and also be still for the anesthesia. She explained to me everything the anesthesiologist was doing, and she continued to hug me and tell me how great a job I was doing. When it was time to deliver, she kept encouraging me, ensuring me and my husband that I was okay, and updated us on how the delivery was going. I'm legally blind, and she made sure I could see my baby well when he came out, and also helped me while I was getting ready to go to antepartum. I will never forget Kristin, who showed me the utmost kindness, encouragement, and confidence while I was feeling silly, scared, and embarrassed for being there five times in two weeks at labor and delivery. If ANYONE exemplifies the GREAT qualities of being a Nurse, it's definitely Kristin!
