Kristin insisted that they bring all the bags back upstairs. With the help of the unit coordinator, Kristin proceeded to search through countless bags of soiled linen until finally recovering the lost dentures.
Kristin is the most compassionate, intelligent, and dedicated nurse that I have known in my career. During her nursing career, Kristin has proven to her patients time and again that she puts their care and safety above all else. Kristin's clinical skills and knowledge are superb, but it is her dedication to patient care and experience that sets her apart.
One example of such care occurred recently on our unit. One of our elderly patients noticed in the morning that his dentures were missing. He notified his wife who called the nurses' station in extreme distress. Kristin was in charge of the unit on that day. Kristin took the time to listen to the patient's wife and assured her that all measures would be taken to track down the dentures. After a thorough room search the patient remembered putting his dentures in his johnny pocket. Unfortunately, the johnny had been changed and all the linen bags had been picked up for the day. Most nurses would have stopped after notifying linen and housekeeping to watch out for the dentures. However, knowing the poor rate at which items are recovered from dirty linen, Kristin insisted that they bring all the bags back upstairs. With the help of the unit coordinator, Kristin proceeded to search through countless bags of soiled linen until finally recovering the lost dentures. These were soon returned to the patient's wife who was so grateful. Though reimbursement could have been provided for the dentures, their replacement would have been a huge burden to the patient.
Another example of Kristin's extraordinary nursing care occurred when a patient on our unit was experiencing abdominal pain. This patient was well-known and had recurring opioid issues and admissions. As charge, Kristin went into the patient's room to assess the situation. Kristin took time to listen to a thorough account of the pain from the patient. She then performed her own abdominal exam and determined that there was an urgent issue going on. Kristin immediately notified the team who performed a CT scan. It was determined that the patient had a bowel perforation and required emergency surgery. I truly believe this patient's life was saved because of Kristin's care and clinical skills. These are just a few examples of the extraordinary care Kristin gives her patients every time she comes to work.
In addition to her patient-centered care, Kristin is an incredible resource to her six central colleagues. Kristin's clinical knowledge is unmatched and she is always willing to jump into a patient situation to help. Kristin answers every question and her nursing colleagues trust her impeccable judgment and explanations. Through her involvement in our UBC, Kristin has contributed to countless educational efforts for our floor and Lahey Hospital. As a Tertiary Nurse Leader she is extremely organized and ensures patient safety while furthering hospital initiatives. For many years, Kristin has been a dedicated member of shared government and various committees. Through this work, Kristin has been instrumental in highlighting colleague recognition and appreciation. Kristin has made huge contributions to nurses week through awards, coffee handouts, and so much more ensuring that everyone feels celebrated. I am sure many of our employees have had a smile on their faces from Kristin's continued efforts.
For all of the above reasons, I believe Kristin is truly a DAISY Nurse. Through her compassionate nursing care, Kristin has touched countless patients' and colleagues' lives. Kristin is an incredible role model that I and so many others continue to learn from.
