Our father was flown in from Fairbanks. When we got to Anchorage, he was intubated and not looking well. This is the first time we ever saw him like this and we were so scared for him. As we were in the room, Kristina Beyer relayed a translation to us so we understood what was going on. She explained what all the equipment was for and even allowed us all to be in there even though there were 3 of us. As we stood by the side of the bed, staring at him, she was able to see our distress and compassionately explained that we can touch him and we can talk to him. This is what we needed but didn’t know how to say it or didn’t know we needed it. Kristina’s compassion covered the entirety of our father’s care, our care, and the entire situation. It’s nurses like Kristina that heal more than the body. She guided, educated, compassionately led us into being available for our father in ways we were able to. She cared for our father so beautifully. Thank you for seeing the root of things and being able to care for a whole room of scared people, as well as for her patient. Thank you for your patience in answering our questions, and your compassion. The heart of a nurse lives in Kristina. You are what embodies what it means to be a nurse and you will live in our story as the angel who kept us together until we could figure out how to do it ourselves. We are so grateful.
