According to this patient’s chart, Krissy helped the mother latch and give expressed breast milk even when needing syringe feeding. She taught and encouraged this patient for two nights.
She was very helpful and patient with me and my son. She taught me how to properly breastfeed and pump. She gave me hope in breastfeeding, which was very motivating for me. She is the best.
Nurse Manager addition: I know this patient did not elaborate; however, Krissy is a staff nurse. She is not on the lactation team. While all staff members know how to assist with basic breastfeeding, Krissy does go above and beyond in this aspect for her patients. While still caring for her normal patient load, she often spends extra time with mothers to help them meet their feeding plan goals. This particular mom had a low-birth-weight baby who was also born early at 37 weeks. She needed to do triple feeds, which includes putting the baby to the breast and pumping. This is a very time consuming, and patients often find it overwhelming and confusing. According to this patient’s chart, Krissy helped the mother latch and give expressed breast milk even when needing syringe feeding. She taught and encouraged this patient for two nights. Looking at the documentation of this encounter, Krissy spent a lot of time encouraging and reinforcing education to this mother. A lot of moms give up when they do not get a good latch immediately or pump what they feel is enough milk. It is evident this mom felt supported by Krissy’s efforts, and that helped her feel confident at discharge.
