Kristofer Generales, BSN, RN-BC, approaches his work on our psychiatric unit for the severely and chronically mentally ill with a maturity, kindness, and respect few others ever attain. His genuine care for the patients, coupled with his clinical expertise, make him invaluable to our team. There are countless moments and examples of how his empathic approach has improved a patient's experience. From preventing or handling medical emergencies to offering a listening ear when patients are upset, he embodies nursing excellence. He is a fun, engaging, thoughtful, and hard-working colleague who is always willing to pitch in and help his nursing colleagues and those in other disciplines.
One of the best parts of the day is listening to Kris communicate with patients when he is administering medications. He shows a genuine interest in each person's care and individualizes his conversations with every patient. It is evident to anyone who overhears these amazing interactions that Kristofer listens to the patients and is invested in their progress through the program. He is invested in treating the whole person. His approach with the patients of on the Second Chance Unit sets an example for us all. Although all staff members agree that he compassionately cares for patients, the patients agree as well.
One patient said that when she needs to talk to someone, "Kris is always there to listen. He understands." Another patient warmly expressed, "he is a genuine person." When the patients were asked to name the first word that came to mind when they thought about Kris, it was the word "funny." Patients have also shared how Kris helps them with self-care and room care; he "communicates well." Those he cares for report that he lets them know they're "doing good" and "was responsible for taking care of my needs and in giving me medication." Another patient stated, "He is a dedicated worker, he shows compassion, he shows love for what he does." It is evident why one patient recently proclaimed, "Kris is so deserving of this award!"
