I recently accompanied a friend to UTMC for surgery. After a long, tiring day I found myself in the surgical recovery room. There, I met Krystal Smith, a nurse who was assigned to my friend. She was very attentive and personable, which took much of the stress out of the situation. She was able to quickly identify things we had in common, which made our conversations interesting and light-hearted. I was able to overhear her interactions with a couple of other people in the recovery room, and she continued to exude pleasantries with everyone she came in contact with. I could hear it in their voices; she put them more at ease. What really made her stand out was the level of care and compassion she gave her patients. Krystal came in several times to check on my friend's well-being. She even had the pharmacy deliver a prescription to my friend's bedside as she knew the pharmacy would be closed by the time of discharge. When it was time for Krystal to review the discharge instructions with me, she went through all the paperwork in detail to ensure there were no questions left unanswered. Krystal is truly a great representation of the meaning of quality customer care. I can't imagine a more perfect candidate for the DAISY Award! Based on the interaction with all staff I encountered that day, particularly Krystal Smith, I will not hesitate to recommend UTMC to my family and friends.
