The compassion, love, and dignity Krystal showed my mother will forever be remembered by our family.
My mother was taken to the Emergency Room due to extreme weakness, disorientation, and severe congestion. After testing, the ER physician made the decision to admit her in the early morning hours.

Once she arrived on the 4th floor, the staff immediately began her care, and she was later sent for X-rays. It quickly became clear that the staff would face a significant communication challenge.

My mother has severe hearing loss and is illiterate; she cannot read or write. Additionally, the hospital had a mask mandate in place, which made communication even more difficult since my mother relies heavily on reading lips. Many staff members had to communicate through my sister or me so that my mother could understand what was happening.

As her treatment progressed and her infection and CO2 levels began to improve, communication became slightly easier, but the challenge remained.

The following day, during the day shift, my mother experienced a frightening episode where her oxygen level dropped to 75%. The rapid response team and respiratory team immediately responded, filling her room. Thanks to their swift action, her oxygen levels quickly rose above 90%, and the team began determining the next steps in her care.

After everything had settled, the RN on duty, Krystal, came into the room to check on my mother. This moment marked the beginning of a truly special nurse-patient bond.

Krystal recognized my mother's communication barriers and did something extraordinary: she adjusted her mask so my mother could see her lips and facial expressions. She spoke directly to her, calmly and reassuringly, telling her she would be okay. That simple, compassionate act changed everything.

My mother immediately trusted Krystal. She became comfortable, less fearful, and willing to interact. Krystal didn't just provide medical care-she provided a human connection.

During a conversation with my sister, Krystal shared that she became a nurse because of her grandmother. The very next day, Krystal began calling my mother "Mama." This deeply touched my mother's heart.

Every time Krystal entered the room, she would say, "You okay, Mamaw? Do you need anything?" My mother would light up every time she saw her. Krystal went above and beyond to bridge the communication gap and made my mother feel safe, valued, and loved-never scared or alone.

On the morning of my mother's discharge, the RN on duty was Maria. While preparing her medications, Maria asked if my mother needed anything. My mother said she had a question and asked, "Where is the lady with the hair on top?"- not knowing Krystal's name. She continued describing her.

I told Maria I was almost certain she was talking about Krystal, who wears her hair in a ponytail. Maria confirmed that Krystal was working that day in another hallway and went to ask if she could come by.

About 30 minutes later, Krystal walked into the room. My mother immediately said, "That's her." The glow on my mother's face was priceless. The joy, comfort, and love she felt in that moment are something my family will never forget.

When Krystal learned my mother was being discharged, she told her she would come back to see her before she left.

Later that afternoon, Krystal returned, and I asked my sister to take a picture of them together. The love and bond between them were clearly visible. It was a moment my mother would treasure forever.

As my mother was being discharged and walking down the hallway, she saw Krystal at the desk. Krystal immediately came over, gave her a big hug, told her goodbye, and said she loved her.

The compassion, love, and dignity Krystal showed my mother will forever be remembered by our family. I want the hospital and leadership to know what a remarkable nurse they have on the 4th floor.

Krystal is the definition of what nursing is meant to be. I also plan to write an article for our local newspaper to share my mother's story and to let our community know what an outstanding facility this hospital is and the exceptional care it provides.

Not all angels have wings; some have stethoscopes. Never forget, you are the piece that made the difference.

Thank you for the hands that turn caring into action, the touch that turns compassion into comfort, and the smile that turns love into healing.

The truly great nurse is hard to find, difficult to part with, and impossible to forget.

Krystal, you are truly one of a kind.
