I was a patient, and the patient in the bed next to me was a mentally disabled woman. Kurt was not my nurse, but these rooms are small, and you can hear what’s going on in the next bed. He introduced himself and talked her through everything he did to and with her. He treated her as an adult but spoke to her at her level of understanding.
The woman had a bowel accident all the way to the bathroom. The PCT was helping clean the woman, and Kurt came in and immediately began cleaning up the floor, and was cheerful the entire time without complaining. He made sure the woman had everything she needed and made a point to say goodbye to her when he left the room.
My mentally disabled cousin lived with me for 10 years, and she was very similar to the woman in the bed next to me. Over the years, I’ve seen many people completely ignore my cousin because of her disability. I was so pleased to hear how Kurt interacted with her and was very impressed with the care he gave her.
Many nurses would have given good care, but it takes a nurse like Kurt who gives an extra special piece of his heart while working.
