I received a call from the daughter of a patient who was being cared for at Adena Medical Center. The patient is a woman in her late 80 's who was hospitalized for a hip fracture after suffering a fall at her extended care facility. The daughter was herself a nurse of 35 years who worked at the Veterans Administration (VA) in Chillicothe -a clinical partner of Chamberlain Columbus. The daughter spent a day with her mother on a day when she was being cared for by a student nurse completing clinical with a different nursing program. Throughout the day, the daughter observed the care of her mother and developed expectations for what to expect with future student nurses. The next day a Chamberlain student was assigned to work with her mother. On this day, the daughter was positively overwhelmed with the care her mother received. The daughter shared that she was unexpectedly impressed with the competence demonstrated by the student from his first entry into the room. From his professional dress to the details of his assessment of her mother, she could not stop going on and on about her confidence in his ability to care for her mother. Simply put, his care of the patient and the daughter was praised and honored repeatedly by the daughter. After sharing her compliments of the student, clinical instructor, and the program she went on to share how she was grateful to know the patients at the VA were receiving equal quality care and that she would not remain silent with her observations. She had nothing but admiration for our program knowing firsthand that extraordinary nurses are entering our profession.Ultimately she shared this puts her mind a little more at ease to consider retiring knowing we have caring, competent nurses to follow in her footsteps. It is truly impressive how the caring and competent acts of Kurt have made a difference in the life of a patient and her daughter and to know how far his care will be heard about within the Ross County healthcare system. Truly extraordinary!
