This patient was given a new chance at loving life, considering all the battles he encountered, because he was lucky to be on the same unit that Kush was managing.
I have worked with Kush for several years, and I have watched him grow from being a new graduate RN to an ICU nurse and now being the manager of 6 East. I was able to work with him and interact with him as he changed positions. As a physical therapist, I get to work in multiple units and areas of the hospital; in addition, the nature of my position requires me to interact with all employees and managers and attend unit rounds. Therefore, I have the benefit of noticing individuals that shine in this profession.
I am nominating Kush Patel for The DAISY Nurse Leader Award simply because he withholds every definition of a compassionate nurse, leader, and human. I have watched Kush sit right beside patient families to address their concerns while providing total care and compassion. Patients and families that appear angry, vulnerable, and in a chiastic state have become calm and at ease simply because Kush added hours of reassurance to their concerns in addition to all the leadership responsibilities that he has.
In addition, walking into the unit he has been managing within the last few years, GE, I acknowledge the love and support from all his staff. I started noticing this culture soon after he started on 6E. Kush does not just hide in the comer of his office. He is everywhere, looking and noticing if anything needs to be improved and assuring his staff is ok. He is positive and supportive of the rest of us visiting staff for every service we provide. He will always stop and ask, "Are you ok?" if any staff members appear to need support.
In MDR rounds, Kush comes in prepared. He knows every important detail needed about the patients on his unit. This dedication appears to show the highest standard of care and safety. In addition, it has supported an efficient patient plan of care and increased dedication from all staff members on the round table.
Most recently, Kush had a patient who was housed in his unit for needed care for almost 300 days. Kush built the most loving and comforting environment for this patient on his unit, including celebrating his birthday, assuring he had comfortable clothing, and just making sure he was not feeling alone. This patient was given a new chance at loving life, considering all the battles he encountered, because he was lucky to be on the same unit that Kush was managing.
There is a reason 6E has a great staff, appears to be very clean and has so much care, compassion, and positive energy. It is not just because the unit got lucky; it is because of strong leadership. Kush is truly a great asset to our institution. He treats this institution as his own. He loves it, respects it, and gives it everything he has to make it safe for our patients.
Note: This is Kush's 2nd DAISY Award!
