Kyerra was assigned to a patient during the last three-day shifts that my orientee and I took over for the night shift each of those nights. Kyerra admitted the patient on that first day. The patient presenting to Children’s with a concerning clinical picture further complicated by a complex social situation. Over the past few days, Kyerra has been an example of the very highest standard of holistic nursing care, with a dedication to the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of this patient’s case. Her coordination of the physical treatment for the patient’s condition notwithstanding, Kyerra truly shone in building an amazing rapport with the patient during a traumatizing experience and fiercely advocating for the patient’s mental and emotional safety. Kyerra took special care to avoid violating the patient’s trust in staff in a few different potentially traumatic situations and maintain a safe space for the patient, and to me, this is one of the most important aspects of this patient’s case. It has been clear over the last few days how much the patient has valued Kyerra as her nurse, and that speaks volumes to Kyerra’s work with her. Despite her shifts being busy in addition to this patient’s care, Kyerra meticulously documented three days’ worth of observations to provide the most information possible to the relevant parties in determining the course the patient’s hospital stay will take, offering herself as a further resource and advocate in her notes above and beyond what is expected of her. Kyerra has provided an incredible example of nursing excellence with her care of this patient, and in my opinion, has exemplified and continues to exemplify the best Children’s has to offer.
