Without Kylee, their guardian angel, their beacon in the darkest night, they would not have been prepared to make the hardest decision of their lives and allow their son to live on through the gift of organ donation.
Working as a bedside nurse in Neurocritical care is not for the fainthearted. Neurological injury is surrounded by anguish and uncertainty for the patient and their loved ones. Part of our job as the bedside nurse is to bring a presence of calm and stability to the patient and their family. We assure the family we will do everything in our ability to safeguard their loved ones while they are in our care. We frequently battle our own emotions to the back of our minds to prioritize the actions needed to save lives. It is not only a job, but also a passion we all share to make a difference.

This nomination goes to a nurse who has been an example of extraordinary nursing on a daily basis to all of her peers, Kylee. Kylee is a leader of the neuro ICU with her selfless dedication to neuroscience. She is up to date on the latest research to ensure her patients have the best outcomes. She not only spends her free time reviewing research but also manages the onboarding of new neuro nurses and sharing her knowledge with the future of our unit. Although there have been several instances in which this nurse has proven herself worthy of this honored award, her peers would like to recognize her for setting the bar even higher.

R.P. came to us on a snowy evening the day after his 17th birthday. He had been out celebrating with friends when a tragic car accident left him fighting to survive. R.P. sustained several injuries in this accident, but the most ominous was his traumatic brain injury. Over the days he was in Kylee’s care, she poured her heart and soul into recovering every neuron in this boy possible. Her nursing excellence was unmatched. We are all in agreeance; it was fate she was this boy’s nurse. In addition to her excellence in critical care, Kylee served as a fantastic resource for the family. She provided education and explanations at every interaction and ensured the family was not only informed, but also understood what was happening with their child. She also was an important nonclinical support to the family with the rapport she had built and reflective listening. She was there to hold their hands through the most traumatic experience of their lives. Without Kylee, their guardian angel, their beacon in the darkest night, they would not have been prepared to make the hardest decision of their lives and allow their son to live on through the gift of organ donation.

While the family was preparing their goodbyes, Kylee was preparing one last gift for the family. She spent her entire day off preparing these gifts to present to the family. She purchased small recording boxes from Build-A-Bear and brought them to the patient’s bedside when the family stepped out for some fresh air. Using a Doppler, she recorded R.P.’s heartbeat on each device. She presented these gifts to the family and spent over an hour consoling the parents and helping them process the events. They didn’t have words to express their gratitude for Kylee, so we have taken this opportunity to thank her for them.
