Since last February we had a patient who had a poor diagnosis but a strong will to live. Kyra went above and beyond by providing the best care for this patient and his family. The patient made the decision to have everything done for him medically but we knew it was going to take a miracle for him to get better and leave our unit. Kyra went out of her way to brighten up his room. She purchased a fish tank for him and he named the fish Gloria. Another nurse helped Kyra type up instructions on how to care for the fish and they decorated the area very colorfully so the patient would have something nice to look at in his room. Kyra also was very supportive of the wife and daughter and they developed a special bond. After many long months on the unit the patient, physician and wife came to a decision that the end was inevitable. The patient decided to be comfort care and his wife was at his bedside. Although Kyra was off on that day, the wife had stated to the nurse who was caring for him that she wished Kyra was there. Kyra happened to call the unit to check on the patient and the nurse informed her that the end was near and they had wished she was there with them. Kyra came in on her own time to be a support to the wife and sit quietly with them while the husband peacefully passed away. This act of kindness was something Kyra did on her own because she is a compassionate nurse for her patients and goes above and beyond to be supportive of them. Kyra did not look for recognition and I was not aware until I heard the staff talking about it. I was so moved by her compassion that I had to share this story with you and recommend her for the DAISY Award.
