She didn't just simply do her job; her kind actions showed she genuinely loved caring for someone who needed her expertise.
I was admitted to the Roper facility downtown Charleston for a mini open heart surgery for mitral valve repair. I was in ICU for a couple of days and then brought up to a room for another few days for rest and recuperation. When I met my nurse, Lacey, I immediately felt comfortable. I was appreciative of how she came in, introduced herself, and got to know me. I have been in three other major surgeries which required hospital stays and this is the first where I felt confident and at rest that my nurse was competent and knew how to handle hurting patients.
Lacey mixed kindness with hard truths, calming reassurance with expertise, and always listened first and then responded to meet my personal needs. I wasn't just another patient whose protocol would dictate the next steps. Her knowledge of how to treat and care for anything that came up was amazing to me. She immediately had thoughts of next steps which she would always share with me, and including me in what we would do next--together. Lacey had an authentic happiness about what she was doing in caring for someone who was hurting and uncomfortable. She didn't just simply do her job; her kind actions showed she genuinely loved caring for someone who needed her expertise. I felt like I was her only patient.
The day I was discharged, she was in my room going over all the meds and at-home care information, and I was so impressed with how she was always present even when there was a huge chance our paths would never cross again. As I was in a wheelchair waiting in the hallway for the runner, I watched Lacey further up come out of a room, arms filled with supplies as she was on her way to care for another hurting, uncomfortable patient. What a gift she shared with me those days she was my nurse. I was so impressed and felt so lucky to have that kind of nurse who, as it turned out, was not just my personal nurse. She was watching and caring for others at the same level of love and expertise that she had cared for me. I can't say enough of how appreciative and filled with gratitude that I was able to have Lacey as my nurse. What an outstanding nurse Lacey is. Thank you, Lacey!
