It was an extremely good catch and advocation for someone who will probably never understand that they will be able to hug their family members an extra time because of her looking out for them.
Laken is always extremely helpful on the unit to anyone and everyone. Her patient care is kind, thorough, and extremely thoughtful. Recently, she was taking care of a patient who had transitioned over to comfort care. This means the patient had no more lab draws or any unnecessary medications given, which is normally nice for allowing the patient to pass without any extra interventions. This particular patient had a medication that Laken noticed was causing hypokalemia. Before the transition to comfort care, her potassium had been replaced multiple times. Laken was concerned that because we were no longer checking the patient’s potassium levels, nor providing supplemental potassium, the patient would most likely become very hypokalemic very quickly. Instead of shrugging it off as a patient on comfort care who is intending to pass anyway, Laken went out of her way to message the doctor with her concerns and eventually got the medication taken off the patient’s MAR. I don’t think this patient will ever understand how much Laken helped to given them a little extra time on this earth, but it was an extremely good catch and advocation for someone who will probably never understand that they will be able to hug their family members an extra time because of her looking out for them. Good job, Laken!!
