Lalisa is an ER nurse, a patient advocate, a preceptor, a foster parent, a mother to three children, and a cheerleader coach
I first met Lalisa Alexander as a student doing her clinical rotation in the ER. I knew immediately we had to have her on our team. She graduated from South GA Technical College in 2008 and became an LPN. Several years later she went back to college at Darton and became an RN in 2017. She has been a nurse for almost 15 years now. Lalisa is an ER nurse, a patient advocate, a preceptor, a foster parent, a mother to three children, and a cheerleader coach. Many times I have tried to find Lalisa to ask her a question. She is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. She never sits down. She is always taking care of her patient, or someone else’s patient, assisting the provider, teaching a student, or orienting a new nurse. She never stops, except to eat! For Lalisa , lunch is usually around 3 pm because she puts patients first. Lalisa is the same every day, smiling and laughing. She never complains. There is no “woe is me “for her. Her mindset is on others, never herself. She has a huge soft spot for sick babies. She jumps on them with everything she has to give and always takes time to comfort the family. I had a call from a patient who had been in the ER. She spoke highly of Lalisa. “She could get my IV when no one else could. She is always so kind to me and you can see the care in her eyes. She is a blessing to the emergency room.” One man told me on a repeat visit to the ER that he did not have a ride home. He said “well the nurse paid for my cab last time and she got me something to drink. Where is she?” The nurse was Lalisa! Recently there was a shooting at 16 East here in Cordele. Lalisa had just arrived and sat down with her fiancé and friends when the shooting began. The group she was with turned over tables seeking shelter. When the gunman was in custody the patrons quickly exited the building. Lalisa went into nurse mode and began triaging the injured. She held pressure on those who were shot to control the bleeding and instructed those with her to hold pressure on other victims. When EMS arrived she directed the medics to the most critical. After all the victims were placed in the ambulance and en route to the hospital she went home and changed into her scrubs. Lalisa worked in the ER taking care of the injured until 3 am and came to work that morning for her 6 am shift. Unlike others who fled the scene when law enforcement arrived, Lalisa went into nurse mode and began delivering care to the injured. Even in duress, she thought of others and what she could do to help. I cannot say enough about her dedication to the nursing profession. She is the most kind, caring, and compassionate person you will ever meet. Please consider her for the DAISY award as she is most deserving.
