Lane Higdon, RN

Lane Higdon, RN, was assigned a patient in the Emergency Department who was needing Hospice Care. The patient lived in WV but all of his family lived in Maryland and he was wanting to be transferred to a facility closer to his family. Lane attempted to facilitate his request. When talking to Case Management, she was informed that this facility was unable to place people in Hospice facilities out of state. Lane did not accept this answer and with the assistance of the ER tech, they called a hospital in Maryland that was close to the patient's daughter and were able to speak with a case manager and pled their case. That case manager called our case manager and was able to work with this patient and get him placed in a Hospice facility that was only 17 miles from the patient's daughter!
I was so proud to watch Lane take the reins with this patient and make a sad situation a little more tolerable for the patient and his family. This is what Nursing is all about. Lane went above and beyond for the patient and his family.
