My mom came to the hospital by ambulance and was in bad shape. She was stabilized in the ER and then moved to the ICU. She was on a ventilator to breathe for her. They were the hardest days of our lives. Let me say that all of the nurses were great! We are thankful for all of them. One stands out to me and to all of us and we are especially grateful for this one amazing nurse, Lane. He is the kindest and compassionate person ever. He cared for Mom like I knew he would his own mother. He answered each and every question we had. When it came time to remove Mom off the ventilator my dad and I held Mom's hand. We quickly noticed we could not calm her. Lane then stepped in and held her hand and spoke to her the entire time to calm her so she could breathe on her own. She was scared as she struggled to breathe and struggled with COPD. Lane calmed her like my dad and I couldn't. He held her hand and at one point it was shift change time and he told her a new nurse would be here in his place and my mom grabbed his hand tighter and would not let go. She then shook her head "no," telling him not to leave her. He sat back down by her side holding her hand and coaching her to breathe. He did not leave her side. My mom says she had a bond with him that only he could calm her. She said that he is her angel who saved her and helped her to breathe on her own. There is no way to describe what an amazing nurse he is. He is meant to do this! He was put here on this earth to help others. He is my mom's hero, he is our hero!
