October 2020 Honoree
lanny martin, BSN, RN, CCRN
Lanny cared for my father, through his Heart Cath leading to a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). I was so impressed with his genuine warmth and caring. His style was a perfect blend of using humor and positive energy combined with diligent attention to detail and professionalism. He made the experience as pleasant and comfortable as possible for my dad.
When he helped my dad with dressing and personal care, he felt as sensitive and attentive as if caring for his own grandfather. Yet he also used a clever sense of humor to diminish my dad's feelings of dependence or discomfort, responding to Dad's quirky jokes with great comebacks. The effect of his style was that my dad was able to enjoy the interaction almost like being with a friend and feeling well-cared for and empowered rather than anxious or helpless.
My doctoral studies included health communication. It was a pleasure to see a skillful practitioner bring the theories and best practices I learned about to life. Lanny is one of a beautiful bouquet of DAISY-quality nurses and staff that we have met and benefited from in the Heart Cath Unit. My dad just received his new heart valve today as I write this, and I'm so grateful that our journey began with Lanny and his colleagues last month.
