June 2026 Honoree
LarizQuennie Gerardo, BSN, RN
When people think about healing, they often think about medications, procedures, and doctors' orders. What I learned during my stay at St. Barnabas is that healing also comes through encouragement, kindness, and people who refuse to let you give up on yourself. For me, that person was Nurse Lariz. Some days, I felt physically exhausted, discouraged, and uncertain about the road ahead. Recovery can be overwhelming, and it is easy to become focused on what you cannot do instead of recognizing how far you have come. Nurse Lariz never allowed me to stay in that place for long. She gently encouraged me to get up and walk the floor, reminding me that every step mattered. What felt impossible to me, she helped make it achievable. She celebrated progress that I often overlooked and helped me recognize that healing happens one small victory at a time.
What stood out most about Nurse Lariz was her genuine concern for my well-being. Her care never felt routine or forced. She treated me as a person first and a patient second. I always felt that she was paying attention not just to my medical needs, but to how I was feeling emotionally and mentally as well. She also shared practical breathing techniques and helpful tips that gave me confidence when I felt uncomfortable or anxious. Those moments of guidance made me feel protected and reassured. Knowing someone was looking out for me brought a sense of peace when I needed it most. Nurse Lariz has a natural kindness that cannot be taught. It shows in the way she speaks, listens, and cares. Even on busy days, she made me feel important. She approached every interaction with warmth, patience, and compassion. Hospitals are filled with people facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Nurses like Lariz bring light into those moments. She reminded me that I was stronger than I realized and that healing is not measured only by test results, but also by the courage to keep moving forward. I will always be grateful for her encouragement, her guidance, and the sincere care she showed me throughout my stay. She made a lasting impact on my recovery and on my heart. With deep appreciation and gratitude, I nominate Nurse Lariz for the DAISY Award. She exemplifies the very best of nursing and is truly deserving of this recognition
