Laura was patient and kind, answering all my questions, often sitting down to do so. She made me feel seen, heard, and validated.
It’s hard to describe just how special of a nurse Laura is but I will try. Laura was my nurse on the Mother Baby Unit when I gave birth to my son and again 2 days later when we were re-admitted due to my son being hypoglycemic. I was scared, overwhelmed and exhausted. Both hospital stays Laura made me feel like everything would be ok. Laura was patient and kind, answering all my questions, often sitting down to do so. She made me feel seen, heard, and validated. Even though I know Laura had other patients, she somehow made me feel like my son and I were her only ones. She delivered on every single one of my needs and requests throughout my stay. I am a nurse on the Medical ICU at UNMH, and I can first-hand attest to how hard it is to do our job while being present for the patient and family, yet Laura did so flawlessly. Laura also made me have a huge amount of respect for nurses on the Mother Baby Unit. She demonstrated the amount of knowledge these nurses have and the vital role they play in educating mothers and fathers. I felt so comfortable with Laura as my nurse because she clearly had a lot of expertise in the area. All the nurses on the mother baby unit were fantastic, but Lura stood out to me. The experience of giving birth and becoming a first time mom is probably the most momentous and life changing experiences in my life and Laura played a huge role in making the experience a good one and preparing me for taking home a newborn. I know Laura doesn’t do what she does for the praise and recognition: This is a labor of love. I can’t put into words how grateful I am to Laura. I will never forget her and the pivotal role she played in smoothing my transition into motherhood.
